The world of crowdfunding has opened the door for a slew of beautiful, creative, and innovative divination decks. Gone are the days of sifting through box after box of cards, searching desperately for some imagery that speaks to you.  Announced via Kickstarter just this week, The Oracle Deck by Bird Ov Prey has left all of us here at Dear Darkling literally shrieking in excitement.

This beautifully designed and handcrafted deck of 33 double-sided cards features such beloved, original, and dynamic imagery that it far surpassed its goal amount of $2,500 in just under 48 hours.  It’s easy to understand why; each card will be hand printed with a letterpress and each deck will be packaged in a gorgeous black box complete with gold foil pressings.

According to Bird Ov Prey’s own description on Kickstarter, the goal of these cards is that of open and free interpretation to achieve self-meditation, thought, and growth.” This is most notably similar to the “Chamber of Reflection” present in freemasonry, a room containing various ordinary objects on which the purveyor within the room assigns reason and meaning.  In other words, the metaphors and symbolism present in this project have been designed to act as visual aids to help one better understand themselves, make decisions, or find clarity within themselves.

Bird Ov Prey cites the ancient practice of alchemic understanding as a huge inspiration for the The Oracle Deck.  This is based around the idea that by finding reason and answers among the cosmos and within the earth we will also, one day, be able to find reason and answers within our ourselves.  This reason and these answers can then be used to improve the very way in which the universe and our individual human spirits exist.

The images found in The Oracle Deck are esoteric and erotic, modern and mystical, dark and anatomical.  They feature objects that are familiar favorites- coffins, skulls, handcuffs, swords, snakes, and ropes – but also runic characters and mystical symbols that could perhaps lead one towards the answers to the questions they so seek inside.

Though the project has already been funded, the deck is still available for pre-order alongside limited edition goodies until October 7th through Kickstarter.  Among these rewards are uncut card sheets, pins, patches, and expansion cards that are work in compendium alongside the original 33 designs.  The highest tier, at $400 or more, promises the “V.I.T.R.I.O.L Phrenology Skull” as a brass cast paperweight.

What speaks to us the most about this deck is how utterly personal the process of its becoming has been.  Each illustration was meticulously designed, each and every card will be printed on both sides by hand at The Arm in Brooklyn, and each deck will be packaged in a beautiful box before heading to its destination.

It is important to have a relationship with oneself in the universe and The Oracle Deck appears as though it will guide us there with ease.

Quick, preorder the deck on Kickstarter before October 7th and get your hands on some gorgeous limited edition rewards while you’re at it!  After the initial pre-order period is over the deck will be available for sale on Bird Ov Prey’s website here.
