KMK Designs: The Stuff of Dark Dreams

When it comes to fashion, it’s all about the details. Those little touches that make an item special: Fine stitching here, the perfect button there, or just the right amount of ruffles on the sleeves. In a world of mass-produced, bland, copycat “fast fashion,” the painstaking care of a handmade brand such as KMK Designs is a breath of fresh air. More than that, it’s a glimpse into a perfect world where you can be whatever you want to be. From everyday witchy togs to epic fantasy ballgowns, KMK offers the garments that dark dreams are made of.

Each expertly constructed item in the shop is custom-made to order. Do you have your own vision in mind? KMK will help you bring it to life with a sketch consultation before they sew a stitch. Best of all, it doesn’t matter what gender, size, or shape you come in because they believe, “The true nature of fashion is to create the feeling of beauty and confidence no matter who you are. We believe that clothing should make you feel as beautiful as you are no matter what society’s standard is.”

Good news, my fellow BBDW (Big Beautiful Darkling Women)! KMK specializes in figure-flattering plus-sized pieces. L-R: Silver Ombre Adelaide Gown//$1744, Hooded Cowl Hankerchief Dress (up to size 5X)//$170+, and Daring Beauty Silk Ballgown//$1915.

The small Minnesota company was founded in 2008 by mother-daughter team Sheridyn and Kaitlyn McClain. Mom Sheridyn’s background includes more than 35 years in costuming, alterations, and hobby sewing. Daughter Kaitlyn is an artist who studied Fashion Design at St. Catherine University. In 2012, she graduated with an award for the Best Senior Collection of her year.

According to their website, they began “from mutual love of creating and the desire to create fabulous costumes. It grew to much more than that. Both of us discovered that through our creations we could help men and women of all shapes, sizes and types to feel more confident and beautiful.” Since starting the company, they’ve added four more staff/creators and tripled their design space. It’s a small wonder why they’re so popular, considering their fantastical collection of goth, steampunk, fantasy, and cosplay clothing and accessories.

The McClains cite their design influences as including, but not limited to, “Steampunk, Gothic, Victorian, Gothic Lolita, and Edwardian fashion.” Casual clothes for everyday gothiness are made of high-quality but practical fabrics such as knits and stretch lace. Their more exotic creations feature lush silks and satins, intricate embroidery, and gorgeous corsetry. Their breathtaking gowns, dresses, and skirts are perfect for brides wanting alternative looks, proms, and fancy dress balls. Don’t forget the accoutrements: Corsets, neck pieces, gloves, and more are available to make your ensemble complete.

In addition to their dreamy women’s line, they make gentlemen’s clothing including badass buckled coats, dapper double- and single-breasted Victorian-style vests, beautifully tailored shirts, and edgy tunic tops.
